TREASURER’S REPORT:
L. Shimoda requested that teachers submit their budget requests and reminded the teachers that all requests must first go to Principal Ginlack. She also stated that if a subscription must be purchased, so that it is in place when school starts, it must be flagged. She further requested that anyone with ideas for new projects let the PTO know so that it can be included in the budget.
RAP: L. Lee and C. Enrico
L. Lee reported that volunteers assisted her earlier today. She expressed her appreciation for their assistance. With their assistance what normally takes up to two hours took only 45 minutes. L. Lee has also been posting on line. Participation has been great.
FUN RUN AND HEALTH FAIR: L. Kamikawa
The Fun Run & Health Fair will take place on February 19, 2010. The “Lets Get Fit” t-shirts were distributed. Students who did not purchase t-shirts may wear their school t-shirts. The Sunrise Crew will be present. A taiko drumming group and a juggler will also perform. Tuesday was the deadline for submission of the money collected by students to be considered for prizes. S. Okumura is tallying the donations.
FIFTH GRADE MURAL: L. Shimoda
L. Shimoda reported that the 5th grade mural is located over the entranceway of the cafeteria and that the 5th graders gave the PTO a gift basket.
T-SHIRT/NEWSLETTER: M. Salvador
M. Salvador reported that he and L. Shimoda talked about doing a design contest and asked if he could generate flyers. He asked whether there should be one or two contests. One contest for a t-shirt design and one contest for a portfolio design. T. Kimura stated that the portfolio design must be submitted by April 1, 2010. It was decided that two contests will be held. Designs for the portfolio contest must be submitted by March 5th. A committee will select finalists whose designs will be posted on the website Voting will be done on-line. Winners will be announced on the 25th. L. Shimoda stated that the office must be notified to expect design submittals. T. Kimura stated that a theme has not yet been selected. There was discussion on selecting a theme. It was commented that the process will also help the PTO to gather email addresses. It was decided that before the flyer for the portfolio design contest is created the committee will come up with a theme. The contest will be open to Kindergartens up to 6th graders. We will learn much from the process and, in doing so, be better prepared for the t-shirt design contest.
NEW BUSINESS:
PTO ELECTIONS:
T. Hirashima will lead the nomination committee along with A. Serikawa. According to the by-laws the election will be held in May. It usually takes place at the Starlite concert. An announcement will be made one month prior to the vote. Voting will be done by voice vote. Nominations can also be made by the floor thus the vote cannot be done on-line. M. Reed has not yet stated whether or not she would like to remain in the PTO’s vice president position. Currently all positions are open. R. Taone will remain on as treasurer. L. Fukumura has expressed interest in one of the V.P positions.
COMPUTER LAB:
Principal Ginlack has approved the idea of allowing students to do their homework in the computer lab. L. Shimoda created guidelines and is looking for parents well versed with computers to assist with monitoring of the lab. The computer lab will be open until 5:30 p.m. and will be available for all students including those enrolled in the A+ Program. The computer lab will only be open when an adult is present to monitor it. Students will probably be able to use the lab for Kid Biz or Teen Biz. The parent monitor will not be allowed to use the computer since the parent won’t be able to monitor students if he or she is using the computer.
ADMINISTRATION REPORT:
Principal Ginlack will attempt to tackle existing traffic problems. He has observed traffic bottle necking “to the max”. They are looking at having the bus park on the main street and having the loop used by parents for a drop off area. They want parents to turn right only but the school has no control over the streets. The SCC will put Principal Ginlack in touch with people who can arrange for the creation of striping to create a loading and unloading zone for buses.
Principal Ginlack announced that the new counselor at MES is Malia Smoot Brown. He reported that she is doing an excellent job and that she is here on a day-to-day basis.
Vice Principal Mann-Molay reported that the fourth and fifth graders took home surveys yesterday. She also stated that a date has been selected for the Military Appreciation Breakfast but she did not have the date with her. Regarding an AED machine, she reported that last year a preschool teacher died on campus and that her mother is working with an organization that is trying to put defibrillators in school. MES has a defibrillator in the heath room. Training on the AED is free. She inquired whether parents or the MES PTO Board would be interested in training. The device can be used on students as well as adults. L. Shimoda stated that all committee chairs should know where the AED machine is located.
S.Okumura reported that both she and Mr. Nakasone will host an HSA training. Parents can see what kinds of questions are asked and how the questions are being asked. The training is primarily for third grade parents and will take place at the end of the month. S. Okumura also reported that Family Movie Night will be held on March 25, 2010. The movie Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs will be shown. The movie will be shown on the same night as the General Membership Meeting.
ADJOURNMENT: President Lori Shimoda adjourned the meeting at 6:45p.m.
NEXT MEETING: The next PTO Board meeting will take place on March 10, 2010.
